 Verb Tense

Simple Tense:

The simple tense of the verb would be what we usually describe as past, present, and future. Present does not mean right this moment, but rather this moment and more in a general sense.

Examples:

Present: Lauren loves the red wings.

Past: I studied French in Paris

Future: You will regret this

Time (present, past, future) = Simple Tense

Complex Tenses:

These tenses let us discuss what is happening right now because they combine with an aspect to help tell the time.

There are two different aspects in English, on is progressive aspect and one is perfect aspect.

You can also combine the two aspects even further and have progressive perfect aspect as well.

Time + Aspect = Complex Tense

Progressive Aspect:

Allows us to describe actions that are happening at the same time as other actions. Though The background action (also known as the anchor action) might just be implied. The auxiliary verb "be" is used to express the progressive aspect.

Progressive Tenses = (be + time) + Present participle.

Examples:

She is waiting: present progressive tense.

She was waiting: past progressive tense.

She will be waiting: future progressive tense.

Perfect aspect:

Associates one action with another action at a later time. For example when discussing the past it implies that it is a past that is relevant to the present. The auxiliary verb "have" is used with the past participle of the main verb.

Perfect Tenses = (Have + Time) + Past Participle

Examples:

She has waited: present perfect tense.

She had waiting: past perfect tense

She will have waited: future perfect tense.

Perfect progressive:

Combining both "have" and "be" together to create a perfect progressive tense.

She has been waiting: present perfect progressive

She had been waiting: past perfect progressive
