Rules and Regularities 

Rules may very from different forms of English but the majority of them remain the same  throughout all varieties of English. There are Three major types of rules and regularities: Linear Rules, Grouping, and Cross referencing. Below are some examples of English rules, for more information refer to the tabs on the left side of the page for each subject.

  • Verbs agree with their subjects in person and number.

  • Single-word modifiers precede the head noun in a noun phrase

  • Transitive verbs require an object noun phrase

  • Prepositional phrases are made up of a preposition and a noun phrase
